Watch a forum about the Aug. 2 constitutional amendment

Hear arguments for both sides on the Aug. 2 constitutional amendment and listen to Kansans share their views on the issue of abortion.

The issue of abortion has long been a subject of debate in Kansas. That dialogue has only intensified after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last month. In a referendum on Aug. 2, Kansas will be the first state in the nation to weigh in on abortion following that court decision through a constitutional amendment.

On July 28, The Journal hosted “Kansas Decides: Abortion” to build a public square and create a container for difficult conversations among differing points of view. Moderated by Journal Executive Editor Chris Green, the forum was developed with the help of 700 survey responses submitted by KLC alumni and Journal readers, who often advised us to play the role of neutral convener, The Journal and KLC’s civic engagement team designed an hour-long program that aimed to start a deeper conversation on one of our country’s most divisive issues.

The forum features interviews with Elizabeth Kirk, a law professor at the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law and director of its Center for Law and the Human Person, who has offered expert testimony on the Value Them Both amendment; and Ashley All, a spokesperson for Kansans for Constitutional Freedom, the coalition opposing the constitutional amendment. It also includes a discussion between six Kansans with different views of the constitutional amendment about what experiences influence their votes and how they would like to see the state move forward after Aug. 2.
