Supporters of the Manhattan High School mascot like to remind opponents that it’s meant to honor a former teacher and coach, Frank “Chief” Prentup, a member of the Tuscarora Tribe. His descendants have urged the school to keep its mascot. Prentup, a graduate of Kansas State University, eventually was hired by the University of Colorado, where he coached baseball and football.
